Purpose:

The aim of this study was to determination the prevalence of retinopathy of prematurity and related risk factor in infants admitted and examined in Fatemieh neonatal intensive care unit-Hamadan.

Methods:

In this cross-sectional-descriptive study, with census sampling methods, all premature infants who were hospitalized four weeks or more in NICU. Regarding the incidence of retinopathy and its risk factors was evaluated.

Results:

In this study, 80 neonates were studied, 24 of which (30%) had retinopathy of prematurity. Of these, 16 were in Stage I and 8 were Stage II.. Mean gestational age of infants was 29.71 ± 2.16 weeks, and more than 75% of ROP were observed in infants under 29 weeks gestational age. However, there was a significant correlation between retinopathy with gestational age, low birth weight, first and fifth minute apgar score, need to resuscitation, use of inotrop drugs and duration of oxygen therapy. But, in the logistic regression, only significant correlation was found between low birth weight and retinopathy.

Conclusion:

The incidence of retinopathy in premature infants born is about the average range of internal and external statistics. Among the independent variables that affect retinopathy, low birth weight was the only significant variable affecting the incidence of retinopathy.
